What do you read?

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”.

People are always talking about amazing books they read and what they loved about it. A lot of them take a lot of pride in the fact that they’ve read books that “smart people” read. Some of them may even hate it but refuse to say it because a lot of smart people liked it and they think they would seem stupid if they didn’t like it. (A friend of mine actually said that to me. Sorry if you’re reading this. 😛 )

I’m someone who has never read a book. Being a gamer, I would always choose to play a game for an hour or two over reading a book. I do spend 80% of my day in front of my computer and read a few articles online everyday if I find something interesting. But book reading just isn’t my thing. And a lot of my friends find it hard to believe that its possible for someone to not like reading a book. A lot of people associate reading with “smart people” and a lot of people are very surprised with the fact that I don’t read.

I honestly love whatever I read everyday, but book reading just isn’t my thing. So many people have tried to get me to read and have failed. But I don’t get it. Why is this such a big deal to so many people. I can’t believe that so many people don’t enjoy gaming but thats their choice and preference. I don’t go around asking people to game. If you don’t game you probably have your reasons and I get that. (Jk. I think you’re stupid, but at least I keep it to myself) And in all honestly, you learn so much from games. Its proven that people who game tend to have better reflexes, reduced stress and are proven to be better decision makers than non gamers. Personally, playing a game is kinda like watching a nice long movie. The stories of some games are amazing and the whole experience of actually controlling the main character of the game kinda feels like you’re creating the movie by yourself.

I do agree that it is important to read for knowledge. As mentioned earlier, I do spend like 5-10 mins every morning reading tech news, and sometimes some general news that I find interesting. But am I a smart person cause I read? Probably not. I agree it is important to stay up to date with what is happening around you, but thats news and not the kind of reading that i’m talking about.

Does reading a book expand your vocabulary? Yes it does. And maybe my articles wouldn’t be so badly written if I did read, but if I could go back in time and spend all my gaming time on reading, would I have done it? No.
